Tangiers is the northernmost city in Morocco. It sits across the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain and we arrived by ferry from Tarifa, the European continents southernmost city. The ferry trip takes about 11/2 hours, so it was the equivalent of traveling from Port Jefferson to Bridgeport Ct. on our local ferry across Long Island sound.

Diane brilliantly planned our two days in Tangiers. She booked a wonderful guide who purchased our ferry tickets, met us as we departed the ship and gave us a day long tour of the city and the environs. It was nothing short of spectacular.

Maggie's fiancé's parents spend winters in Morocco (Josh's dad is a professor and spends the quarter abroad with students), so we we able to meet up and spend the weekend with them making us a party of 6.

Our day tour involved visits to an old hotel for the mint tea experience, a stop at the Caves of Hercules, a drive down the coast to the artistic old town of Asilah, and a stop at the Medina, or old walled town in Tangier. It was a busy and eventful day. The whole tour took about 12 hours so we got to see and experience a lot!
Caves of Hercules

Hercules plays an important role in this region of the world. Legend has it that he smashed the mountain a mountain at the western end of the Mediterrean Sea, thereby joining it with the Atlantic Ocean. Tangiers sits at the southern tip of The Strait of Gibraltar. The Strait is marked on both continents by tall mountains (the Rock of Gibraltar on the European side and either one of two prominent mountains located on the African side).
